This study was one of the first projects to explore the risk of cancer specifically among persons with schizoaffective disorders. The results found no significant increase in the risk of cancer for these individuals, which was reported as positioned between the schizophrenia findings of lower risk and bipolar findings of higher risk. Such findings suggest that the associations between mental health diagnoses and cancer are complicated and varied.
