With the understanding that individuals with mental illness and substance abuse disorders have higher rates of cigarette smoking, less success in quitting, and high rates of death due to tobacco-related illness, this article analyzes the scope of the comorbidity of mental illness and tobacco use. The analysis provides approaches to treatment of tobacco dependence among this population. The article also emphasizes the importance of integrated treatment of tobacco dependence and mental illness.
