This study involves interviews with social workers who discussed their experiences with patients who were living with serious mental illness and cancer. Analysis showed that stigma and compartmentalized care were a detriment to patients’ care. For example, many of the patients’ cancer-related concerns were discredited due to the stigma of their mental illness. Understanding the application of stigma theory to this complex health situation highlights the need for clinical coordination and care equity.
