NBHN’s network sibling, the National Native Network, is tackling disparities in tobacco use and cancer control for another vulnerable population: Native Americans. This population has faced disparities related to tobacco and cancer as well as disparities in mental health. This review details the complex mental health situation for Native Americans. Cultural understandings of mental illness can affect issues from care utilization to diagnostic ability, while funding issues prevent the Indian Health Service from being able to provide accessible care. These complex factors have prevented this population from receiving adequate mental health care.
