This article provides a great introduction to the relationship between tobacco use and mental illness/substance abuse disorders. Of the 443,000 annual tobacco-related deaths in the United States, 200,000 are among persons with mental illnesses or substance abuse disorders. Smoking has historically been accepted in behavioral health settings, but perspectives are changing. The article calls for progress on clinician and patient education, expanded access to treatment, and the resolution of existing knowledge gaps.
