More than 1.6 million Americans are expected to receive a new cancer diagnosis this year. Though cancer most strongly affects the individual, its impact extends to relatives and friends as well. Family and friends are often central in providing care or assistance in both the immediate and long-term management of cancer. Furthermore, as a result of advances in treatment and health care changes, much of cancer care is offered on an outpatient basis and is performed at home by caregivers. Research indicates that caregiving can be both demanding and burdensome – physically, emotionally, and financially – for many cancer caregivers.

The November Research to Reality cyber seminar will highlight the work of researchers and practitioners working on cancer caregiving in the community.

Erin Kent, Phd, MS, will highlight findings from the National Alliance for Caregiving report Cancer Caregiving in the U.S., focusing on cancer caregiver needs, and gaps and opportunities in outreach, services, and support. She will also highlight some current caregiver research resources. Kristen Cox Santiago, MS, will describe the work of the Cancer Support Community and how they work with comprehensive cancer coalitions to identify and address the needs of caregivers.

We will also be joined by Allison Harvey, MPH, CHES, who will give an overview of the George Washington Cancer Center Report, Supporting Cancer Survivors through Comprehensive Cancer Control Programs and highlight the place of caregivers in survivorship.

The final part of the webinar will offer an opportunity to engage with the presenters.  We invite you to share your own experiences and thoughts.
