Trauma is not often considered in tobacco prevention and control; however, well-established research has shown that trauma, and the resulting toxic stress, experienced in childhood and early adulthood is linked to a risk of lifetime smoking. To effectively address tobacco-related disparities among individuals with mental health and substance use challenges, providers must consider the impact of trauma on the clients’ journey to recovery through tobacco cessation services.

Join the National Behavioral Health Network for Tobacco and Cancer Control on Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2-4 p.m. ET, for a masterclass exploring how to incorporate trauma-informed resilience-oriented (TIRO) practices into tobacco cessation services across multiple levels.

This masterclass workshop will provide an opportunity to engage in real-time discussion from National Council for Mental Wellbeing expert, Amelia Roeschlein, DSW, MA, LMFT, consultant for trauma-informed and resilience-oriented equitable services and Youlim Song, program coordinator.

By joining this masterclass, participants will:

  • Understand the connection between trauma and commercial tobacco use.
  • Explore how to implement TIRO approaches across policy, organizational, practice and client levels.

Discuss and strategize best practices to address commercial tobacco use among individuals with mental health or substance use challenges and a history of trauma.
